On a small country lane far away from mass tourism we reach the sub-centre La Blanca. You will feel as if you were the first adventurer who discovered this site hidden in the middle of the jungle. Since 2004 the University of Valencia is working on this new excavation project, thus you have the unique opportunity to get a direct insight into the excavation work. Besides the excavation project you get the unique chance to admire the beautiful murals inside the buildings.

We aim to support the communities of the villages lying next to small and little visited Mayan sites. Once they realize that "their" site is important, they will start to protect it from grave-robbers and vandals. This is why we we have lunch with a Guatemalan family in the nearby village. You will see how people live far away from the tourist path and enjoy a delicious home-made meal!

Yaxha is a unique archaeological site in the Petén. Restoration work has taken place here since 1989 in cooperation with the German KfW (Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau). Many buildings have been excavated and restored, and the former shape of the city is once again recognizable. Admire the sacred roads, the observatory, several huge acropolises, and many temple pyramids! We finish our tour with the breathtaking view over the lake from temple 216, the highest temple in Yax-ha.

Both sites, La Blanca and Yaxha, are located in the research area of the Triángulo Cultural. This "Cultural Triangle" is the biggest research project in the Mayan world with 300 workers and 12 scientists. For the first time a surface size of 1,200 km˛ is being investigated and documented. It consists of the three large centers of Yaxha, Nakum, and Naranjo as well as 13 sub-centers.
By your participation in the tour, you contribute to the protection of the sites from grave-robbers, as they never frequent centers which are often visited by people.
