Yaxha - Nakum

2 days & 1 night

Yaxha is an immense site lying at the shore of the lake. During 1989 and 2006 intensive restoration work was carried out. Many excavated buildings can be admired and give an idea of Mayan architecture and their daily life. The original shape of the big Mayan city-state is recognizable again. Due to our explanations about the architecture, archaeology, the “Triangulo Cultural”-project, and the Mayan culture in general you will get a well rounded understanding about the ancient Mayan World!

Nakum is the archaeological site with the most restored buildings in the whole of Guatemala after Tikal. Works have been carried out for more than 14 years, working all year round!

Yaxha

Nakum is 18 kilometers away from Yaxha lying deep in the jungle. The road to Nakum leads us through dense jungle vegetation and requires us to travel by four wheel drive. In rainy season it might be necessary to walk the last few kilometers. You can imagine Nakum as an oasis within the deep rainforest – a one to two hour-drive through the rainforest and suddenly a huge Mayan city-state appears in front of your eyes.

Here you can admire several high temples, and with 14 interior patios, this makes this impressive structure the
largest palace acropolis in the whole Mayan World!

Both sites, La Blanca and Yaxha, are located in the research area of the Triángulo Cultural. This "Cultural Triangle" is the biggest research project in the Mayan world with 300 workers and 12 scientists. For the first time a surface size of 1,200 km² is being investigated and documented. It consists of the three large centers of Yaxha, Nakum, and Naranjo as well as 13 sub-centers.

By your participation in the tour, you contribute to the protection of the sites from grave-robbers, as they never frequent centers which are often visited by people.
